PUBLIC ART: WHAT IS SMALL IS LARGE

WHAT IS SMALL IS LARGE is a vinyl-on-glass installation for Boise Public Works Department. This project was inspired by the idea that small indicators can tell the bigger story of the rich, healthy environment of the Boise River. Frogs, aquatic insects, fish, and plants let us know that temperature, and water quality, is favorable. Some blend in, like sculpin and case builders, and can barely be seen in the rocks, where others, like heron, stand out.

My goal for this project was to create site-specific artwork for a welcoming and joyful presence for those working and visiting the Public Works Department. I gathered information with questionnaires and interviews from employees. Dorene MacCoy was extremely helpful identifying specific bugs and fish in the Boise River.

My drawings of frogs, trout, and sculpin are emphasized in grand scale and greet visitors in the lobby and conference rooms. Fluid, watery ribbons of blue and green weave through the entire floor. Giant mayflies and colorful river rocks tumble and continue the overall theme. Signs2U did a wonderful job on the installation.

WHAT IS SMALL IS LARGE is located on the fourth floor of Boise City Hall.
